Mecca is owned by the public company Rank. A shareholder has recently increased their stake in the group to over 40%, very near becoming a majority stakeholder.

The investor is Quek Leng Chan – a private investor from Malaysia. He offered 150p per share – thereby valuing the company at £586million.

Rank have rejected the offer, stating that the valuation is too low. Shares in the group have now risen to over 151p.
