Since the time UK passed a law in 2007 regarding smoking ban in indoor facilities like pubs, restaurants and clubs, live bingo gamers and smokers at the same time have been looking for alternatives to enjoy both indulgences. Further, it is a sad truth that several people in the UK are smokers. As a result, many bingo halls have been closing down brought by the smoking ban.

Associating with other live bingo players who are mostly smokers is a great opportunity to interact and be part of a winning moment. And, smoking plays a vital role for some and even a necessity to others in order to ultimately enjoy the bingo fun. That is why live bingo gaming minus the cigarettes is a boring game for some players.

However, with the introduction of electronic cigarettes in the market, bingo and smoking enthusiasts have high hopes that smoking ban will be lifted as long as e-cigarettes are used. It is an effective substitute because it has no smoke yet still it transports the nicotine to the user. It looks and feels just like the same original cigar that you have been puffing.

Another alternative springing in the market is the online bingo gaming. Traditional bingo fun brought at the comfort of your very own home. No restrictions on smoking and filled with infinite possibilities on prizes, bonuses and rewards. Also, various innovations have been made to uplift its social interaction – live chat, webcam activation and the like.

While live bingo halls are shutting down one by one, UK bingo sites are blooming like flowers in the field. New bingo sites are added each year and sometimes even each month. So many to choose from, and with competition up and about to strengthen more and more are to be expected from them. From the simple rebates to the major loyalty schemes, and other fun and exciting add-ons, live bingo players will surely be enticed to try, play and discover the beauty of online bingo gaming.

News online bingo sites are launched each month; thus, strengthening competition and more incentives await the players. Will this be true all throughout the existence of mankind? Change being the only constant thing in this world is also expected to happen in the online bingo industry – boosted costs, strict taxation and regulation, decreased competition and revenues.

Government and Taxation

Brought by the recession, various governments are struggling with their finances, and may take action to legalise online gaming with a strict tax ranging from 1 to 15 per cent. Thus, it is an additional deduction from the online bingo sites’ income or a further expense on the players’ part.

Being under a law with stringent regulations means they need to operate with firm guidelines; hence, higher operating and maintenance costs.

At present, due to minimal regulations online bingo sites can hide the actual number of tickets sold, and the winner’s prize being directly proportional with the game’s earnings can be manipulated by the operators in order to bag more profit.

Market Consolidation

With the start of consolidation (and is expected to increase) of operators, competition may decrease. With a low competition, prizes and bonuses may also turn out to be minimal in the future.

It’s also likely that players will begin trying other games such as scratch cards, slots and texas holdem type games.

Economy

TV advertisements being neglected by most establishments have lowered its price tremendously to draw new clients. And, these new clients include some online bingo sites. As economy began to stabilize it is expected that TV ads will again be in demand – per law of supply and demand, as demand increases, price also increases.

With the recession, some people (especially those who are jobless) are beginning to spend wisely by cutting down unnecessary expenses including travel, and have opted to stay at home and play online. If the economic crisis ceases, all these existing thrifty and jobless individuals will be out and resume with their regular outdoor activities.

That is, shutting off one’s foreign competitors by not allowing them to serve one’s market is a great defiance.

Since the legislation of US’ Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA), Antigua and other concerned countries have always been fighting for World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) international law on free trade.

US’ pursuit to prevent problems in internet gambling especially on morale issues gave way to UIGEA’s legislation. However, financial and economic analysts see it as a strategy to protect their economy by restricting online gambling competitors from serving the US market. The legal counsel of Antigua, Mark Mendel stated, “What the United States has attempted to cloak as a moral issue is now clearly nothing but economic protectionism at its worst.”

Currently 11 operators (including the founders of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker) are charged of fraud, money laundering and running illegal online games. Further, US is on the process of reviewing the legislation to declare online gaming – bingo, poker and casino games – illegal within the year; however, earlier this week FBI’s feat suggests that the estimated target may be extended.

Honourable Harold Lovell, Antigua’s Finance Minister asserts that the fight of US to streamline its competition with foreign operators is a contravention of the international treaty. He said, “I am not aware of any other situation where a member of the World Trade Organisation has subjected persons to criminal prosecution under circumstances where the World Trade Organisation has expressly ruled that to do so is in breach of an international treaty.”

Mendel stated that Antigua will be appealing to the WTO regarding steps taken by US to ban online gambling, which is a violation against WTO’s laws.

There are many bingo clubs in the UK market, some land based, some online and some cover their bases and have both types. However rumours are flying around at the moment that there may be a new deal about to be made, which will be a first in the ever changing world of bingo.

A land based bingo operator, who wishes to remain anonymous at the moment but who does have several bingo clubs, has said that they are considering a sponsorship deal with an online bingo operator. The idea is to negotiate a multi-year deal with one or two large online bingo operators in a first of its kind partnership.

If things worked out as planned the various land based bingo sites would be branded with the online bingo brand, who would not only endorse the company but would also be using branded dabbers, pens and bingo books. The online company would also have access to the bingo halls database, so it would be able to target these players, who may not play online, and communicate any promotions to them.

One of the biggest advantages of this, to the online bingo company, is the chance to market their brand to people who already play bingo, so are a confirmed audience, but who may be playing online with a different online bingo company or who may not be playing online at all. Either way though this appears to be a very attractive marketing opportunity, and one that should be far cheaper than TV advertising. More and more bingo brands have been seen on the television recently but this is an expensive means of getting name awareness, especially when you consider that many viewers will not be interested in bingo so it is quite a hit and miss method with low conversion rates.

It sounds an intriguing idea in principal and one which we will follow with interest.

There are so many online bingo sites for players to choose from that it stands to reason that some are going to do much better than others. One that has suffered over recent years is Bingo.com, and they are hoping that they won’t have to report a loss for the 6th year in a row.

In 2009 revenue was $5.82 million, although it has been reported that the last quarter of 2010 saw revenue of just $110,884. This was still a 14% increase from the previous quarter, although year on year the company saw a 93% decrease in revenue – a huge sum.

Tarnie Williams, the CEO of Bingo.com Limited, the operator of Bingo.com explained; “The third quarter of 2010 was one of transition for Bingo.com. The first phase of our revised business plan is now underway. Our costs have declined, our net loss has been reduced and the purchase of the remaining four percent domain name payments for the Bingo.com URL has been completed. The second phase of our plan has also begun as we are preparing a new Bingo.com marketing campaign and working with Unibet to perfect the online bingo offering. The third and final phase of our plan will start in the first quarter of 2011 when we launch our media plan in markets targeted to provide Bingo.com with the best return on investment and the highest likelihood of helping the company return to profitability.”

In 2009 they reported a $1.18 million loss whilst in 2010 they managed to get this figure down, reporting a loss of $878,972.

If you haven’t played at Bingo.com yet it’s well worth a look. They are currently offering £3 free to try out the site with as well as a 100% first deposit bonus.

What can you expect from 2011 new bingo sites? It’s a bit of a ways off yet, but we’re pretty serious about new bingo sites here at Cute Bingo, so here’s what we think we’ll see in 2011:

1. More scratchcard sites

Scratchcards are getting bigger and bigger, and we’ll think there’ll be more new sites launching in 2011 and in 2010.

2. More free bingo

Higher bingo bonuses, more generous free bingo offers: we think there’ll be more and more free bingo money available to players in 2011.

3. More games

The game technology is getting better and better. 2010 has already spoiled us with fantastic game options and 2011 should be no different!

4. More bingo fans

The UK bingo community is experiencing huge growth year on year – by 2011 the number of online bingo players will be massive!

2010 new bingo sites have been among the best we’ve ever seen – far better than the new bingo site offerings of 2009. Tasty Bingo and Titan Bingo, for example, have already become two of the biggest names in the UK bingo world and they’ve only been live for a few months.

UK bingo sites are always getting better and better, so we’ve no doubt in our minds that 2011 new bingo sites will be just as fantastic!

Update:

It’s been several months now since our initial post on what to expect with new bingo sites in 2011, and we’re only more excited! 2010 has proved to be a massive year for bingo and, from the looks of things, there is a lot in the works for 2011 also.

One thing that we hadn’t touched on back in March are the massive changes that are occurring in social media. Obviously we’ve all got Facebook (who doesn’t!) and we wouldn’t be surprised if there is more Facebook-bingo integration in 2011. There are certainly many opportunities there.

It also seems that there are many new players coming up in the market. The ‘old’ sites are certainly going to get a rattling in 2011, while newcomers to the industry are going to be winning lots of new fans.

All in all, it’s an exciting time to be a bingo player! Check back here in exactly one month and we’ll have all the highlights for you!

The bingo part of the famous 888′s business for the first half of 2010 served as a savior to what otherwise could be described as a poor first half of 2010. 888 owns Wink Bingo, Posh Bingo and 888Ladies Bingo and supplies the gaming platform for well known players on the online bingo scene, like Foxy Bingo and Cheeky Bingo.

888 generated £14.7 million in the first half of 2010, compared to £ 3.2 million in the first half of 2009. This is mainly due to 888’s purchase of Wink Bingo and Posh Bingo, which are responsible for £12 million of those revenues. While other parts of 888’s business faced a decline in revenues for that same period.

The other parts of 888 were hit by decline, which was most severely felt in the Poker area where revenues dropped off rather sharp during the World Cup. Even the announced recovery in August, could not prevent a revenue drop off 44% compared to the first 6 months of 2009.

888 stated it would cancel its dividend so it can maintain a cash flow for further acquisitions; as analysts predict a rise in mergers and takeovers in the industry where consolidation appears the new hot term of the moment.

An 888 official stated that the difficult first half was mainly due to the economical environment, which impacted its poker and casino assets in a negative way. In order to combat the drop in revenue from those assets A cost reduction program has been implemented.

Despite the disappointing results of the first half of 2010, the upturn in August shows signs of recovery, whether or not that will be sufficient to make up for the drop in the second half of 2010, remains to be seen. However, 888 remains confident in its ability to attract and retain players to 888′s brands through innovation.
